June Lake Holiday

Early morning at June Lake, CA

I took a holiday to northern California this past week to visit my son. He lives in June Lake which is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range also home to Mount Whitney the highest point in the contiguous US at 14,505 feet. The beauty and enormity of this area is unmistakably worth the eight hour drive through the desert from San Diego. The rewards are breathtaking vistas, beautiful spring fed lakes, which ensures their clarity, and "sandía" (watermelon) tinted sunsets. While driving a long and desolate stretch of highway 395 I thought "this trip is much like life, often we go through a period of drought in order to reach the beauty". Eight hours alone in a car will provoke deep thinking.
There are many beautiful lakes in this area. Since much of southern California is dry desert this is a popular destination. There are numerous accommodations ranging from rustic camp sites to five star spas. It is a gorgeous place to visit and live. There is so much to do and see. A week is not enough time to see it all.
I believe we take on our environment whether we live in the city or in the wilderness. I certainly took on the peace, gentleness and solitude that only nature provides. My son has figured it out for himself. He knows he needs to be in this environment to nurture his soul. For now I am working on how to stay balanced and live in my world, or maybe......it is time to move on.
